You get the chance to do one of the must-do’s in Iceland and walk and climb on a glacier, explore Skógarfoss, Seljalandsfoss, the black beach and other highlights of the South on your way and be back at your accommodation by the end of the day. Looking back at a day filled with adventure and unforgettable memories.
It is also perfectly located for a quick stop while making your way around Iceland, guaranteed to be yet another highlight of what this beautiful and unique island has to offer.
Surrounded by some of Icelands most famous volcanoes, Sólheimajökull is the perfect place to witness the dynamic of “ice and fire”. Walking on ice that formed hundreds of years ago and at the same time looking at ash created by past volcano eruptions is a unique experience. It is also the ideal place to view the effects of global warming has had on Icelandic glaciers; retreating rapidly over the last few decades the glacier changes every day, creating interesting features and making the landscape even more exciting.
The hike starts at the Sólheimajökull parking lot, where you will meet your qualified guide and get all the equipment needed for the tour.
After an easy 15 minute hike to reach the glacier, your guide will show you how to put on crampons, use ice axes and teach you everything you have to know about walking on the ice.
Once everybody is ready it is time to head out and make your way through the labyrinth of ice and ash, crevasses, moulins and streams of meltwater until reaching a viewpoint offering stunning views over the valley and the lagoon.
You will spend enough time on the ice, exploring its features and learning interesting details about the glacier and its history before heading back to your car. Condition permitting you will be able to try to ice climb a wall that suits your wish and challenge yourself!
